Stone Garden "Stone Garden" (1969)

    Каменный сад - красота необработанных глыб. Археологи этим летом обнаружили каменное сооружение возрастом около 4000 лет, которое уже прозвали "Стоунхенджем из Нидерландов"... Но я больше увлечён провинциальной американской рок-группой Stone Garden, образовавшейся к середине 60-х гг. в городке Льюистон (штат Айдахо). Вначале она называлась The Three Dimensions, потом - Knights of Sound и, наконец, с 1967 г. - Stone Garden. Ядром команды были братья Speer, привлекавшие к концертной деятельности своих школьных товарищей (и не только их). Уже в 1965 г. подросткам удалось сделать свою первую студийную запись - "The World Is Coming To An End". 

   На одной из сцен в Льюистоне парней заметил менеджер Don Tunnell - средней руки бас-гитарист, сам делающий первые шаги в управлении музыкальными коллективами. Чувак настоял, чтобы квартет изменил свою стилистику и стал соответствовать эпохе "детей цветов", а потом значительно утяжелился. Постепенно на концерты Stone Garden приходило всё больше и больше любителей жёстких психоделических ритмов. 

    Увлёкшись выступлениями перед публикой, парни только в 1969 г. отправились в студию, где записали свою первую грампластинку-миньон с синглом "Oceans Inside Me" (его вообще считают одним из лучших хеви-психоделических боевиков конца 60-х гг.). Одни утверждают, что студия была любительской и принадлежала старому знакомому наших парней, другие настаивают на том, что запись была сделана по контракту с легендарной студией "Fraction" (Angelus), но сам Пол Спир сообщает в интервью, что музыканты работали в домашней студии инженера по имени Doug Smith в Кларкстоне (штат Вашингтон), у которого была вполне профессиональная аппаратура. Утверждают также, что диск был распечатан лишь в количестве 300 экз. Сингл, однако, стали почти непрерывно крутить по местному радио и у парней даже появились поклонники среди диск-жокеев. 

   Один из новых поклонников предложил талантливым музыкантам записать лонгплей в г. Ванкувере (штат Вашингтон), что они с удовольствием и сделали. В студии работали Gary Speer (ведущий вокал, гитара), Dan Merrell и Neal Speer (ударные, подпевки), Paul Speer (соло-гитара, продюсирование), David Lee (электрическое пианино, подпевки), John Helton (бас-гитара), Russ Pratt (ведущий вокал, орган), Dan Merrell (бас-гитара, подпевки) и John Purviance (саксофон, гармоника). Как видно, собралась довольно внушительная команда. Записав несколько песен, но так и не издав альбом, группа пережила ряд кадровых изменений. Команда пережила даже уход Гари Спира, который всё же к началу 1971 г. вернулся в команду. Вскоре группа сменила название на Speer Brothers Band, а на следующий год была распущена. 

   Композиции, записанные в 1969 г., стали основой диска, скомпонованного и выпущенного в 1998 г. компанией "Rockadelic Records". К ним добавили сохранившуюся в архивах запись 1965 г. "The World Is Coming To An End", сингл "Oceans Inside Me" в двух версиях и пару-тройку вещиц, записанных в студиях и на концертах в 1969-1971 гг. Поздне́е переиздания альбома осуществили Gear Fab Records, Shadow Kingdom Records и др. В наше время группа уже известна всем серьёзным поклонникам классического рока. Многих очень удивляет необычно высокий профессионализм провинциальных тинейджеров.

    Stone garden - the beauty of untreated blocks. This summer, archaeologists discovered a stone structure about 4,000 years old, which has already been nicknamed “Stonehenge from the Netherlands”... But I’m more fascinated by the provincial American rock band Stone Garden, formed in the mid-60s. in Lewiston, Idaho. At first it was called The Three Dimensions, then Knights of Sound and, finally, from 1967, Stone Garden. The core of the team were the Speer brothers, who involved their school friends (and not only them) in the concert activities. Already in 1965, the teenagers managed to make their first studio recording - “The World Is Coming To An End”.

    On one of the stages in Lewiston, the guys were noticed by manager Don Tunnell, an average bass player who was himself taking his first steps in managing musical groups. The dude insisted that the quartet change its style and become consistent with the era of the “flower children”, and then became significantly heavier. Gradually, more and more fans of hard psychedelic rhythms came to Stone Garden concerts.

     Carried away by performing in front of the public, the guys only went to the studio in 1969, where they recorded their first LP with the single “Oceans Inside Me” (it is generally considered one of the best heavy-psychedelic action films of the late 60s). Some claim that the studio was amateur and belonged to an old friend of our guys, others insist that the recording was made under a contract with the legendary studio "Fraction" (Angelus), but Paul Speer himself reports in an interview that the musicians worked in the engineer's home studio named Doug Smith in Clarkston (Washington), who had quite professional equipment. They also claim that the disc was printed in only 300 copies. The single, however, began to be played almost continuously on local radio and the guys even gained fans among disc jockeys.

    One of the new fans suggested that the talented musicians record a long play in Vancouver (Washington State), which they did with pleasure. The studio included Gary Speer (lead vocals, guitar), Dan Merrell and Neal Speer (drums, back-up vocals), Paul Speer (lead guitar, production), David Lee (electric piano, back-up vocals), John Helton (bass guitar), Russ Pratt (lead vocals, organ), Dan Merrell (bass, back-up vocals) and John Purviance (saxophone, harmonica). As you can see, quite an impressive team has gathered. Having recorded several songs but never released an album, the group went through a number of personnel changes. The team even survived the departure of Gary Spear, who nevertheless returned to the team by the beginning of 1971. The group soon changed its name to the Speer Brothers Band and disbanded the following year.

    The compositions recorded in 1969 became the basis of a disc compiled and released in 1998 by Rockadelic Records. To them were added the 1965 recording “The World Is Coming To An End” preserved in the archives, the single “Oceans Inside Me” in two versions and a couple of things recorded in studios and at concerts in 1969-1971. Later, the album was re-released by Gear Fab Records, Shadow Kingdom Records, etc. Nowadays, the group is already known to all serious fans of classic rock. Many are very surprised by the unusually high professionalism of provincial teenagers.
